Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety Disorder

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy deemed 'Gold Standard' for anxiety disorder treatment.

Contrary to popular misconceptions, anxiety disorder is not caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, a biological problem with the brain, or by genes. Anxiety disorder is caused by a number of behavioral factors. To overcome anxiety disorder, we need to identify and successfully address those factors. When these factors are identified and successfully addressed, issues with problematic anxiety disappear.

When the root of the problem is addressed, the problem and its symptoms disappear…for good.

Since Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a form of ‘talk therapy,’ can identify and successfully address the root causes of anxiety disorder – the behaviors that cause issues with anxiety, it is an effective treatment for anxiety disorder. In fact, research released in 2011 confirmed that CBT was the ‘Gold Standard’ for anxiety disorder treatment.[1][2]

The study entitled, “Cognitive behavioral therapy in anxiety disorders: current state of the evidence” concluded that CBT was both efficacious and effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

The study defined Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as:
An amalgam of behavioral and cognitive interventions guided by principles of applied science. The behavioral interventions aim to decrease maladaptive behaviors and increase adaptive ones by modifying their antecedents and consequences and by behavioral practices that result in new learning. The cognitive interventions aim to modify maladaptive cognitions, self-statements or beliefs. The hallmark features of CBT are problem-focused intervention strategies that are derived from learning theory [as well as] cognitive theory principles.

In simple terms, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps the individual identify the key behaviors that produce unhealthy anxiety – the ways a person copes with adversity, uncertainty, and risk, and then provides healthy ways of coping. These healthy behaviors end up replacing the unhealthy behaviors with the end result being healthy ways of coping rather than anxious ways.

For example, worry is a common behavior associated with problematic anxiety. A Cognitive Behavioral Therapist can help a person recognize her worrisome behavior and then help her adopt behaviors that minimize and eliminate worry. This is all done through conversation, direction, support, and on going reassurance. As the person makes healthy change, her anxious behaviors become less and less. Consequently, her anxiety becomes less and less of an issue until it is no longer an issue at all.
