Assertive behavior - Part 3 - November 21, 2006

We are all different. Yet we are all God's children. We are all united behind this country and the common cause of freedom, justice, fairness, and equality. That is what unites us. - Barbara Boxer

As a human being, you are equal to everyone else. No one is higher or lower in value than anyone else.

That means you have the right to live your life the way you decide, as long as you don’t violate anyone else’s rights and freedoms or the laws of the country in which you live.

As an equal human being, you are entitled to a number of human rights, which brings us to Living Assertively Tip 2:

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE TREATED AS AN EQUAL.

Not only are you equal, but you have the right to be TREATED as an equal, as well. That means that no one has the right to mistreat you or treat you as if you were less than others. Certainly, there are going to be people who will (there are people who THINK they are of more value than others), however as an equal human being, you have every right to NOT let them treat you this way.

And this is what being assertive is all about: standing up and protecting yourself from abusive behavior when the situation requires it.

As we mentioned before, assertiveness doesn’t mean being cold, callous, heartless, selfish, and uncaring. It means that you can still be a warm, sensitive, caring, and empathetic person, BUT you do have the RIGHT to protect yourself from harm or abuse, or from being treated poorly.

That’s your right: TO BE TREATED AS AN EQUAL.

This week we ask you the question: Are you being TREATED as an equal?

You can let us know your comments here:

[Sorry, this poll is now closed.]

Have a great week.
